Sewer Repair in Philadelphia, PA, and Surrounding Areas
In the last 20 years, there have been many changes in the sewer repair industry. As the cost of labor rose and safety rules got more stringent, professionals have looked for more innovative ways to repair and replace piping without just digging them up as our grandfathers did. This has led to a whole new field of technologies grouped under the heading “Trenchless”. This includes pipe bursting, pipe lining, slip lining, pipe coating, and point repairs. Today when a sewer line is collapsed, broken, or corroded, or has cracks, holes, or joint offsets, the only option doesn’t have to mean a trench across your yard or a ripped-out wall in your home. Now there are options that can do the job while saving you time, money, and aggravation.
There are lots of contractors who can perform plumbing services in Philadelphia, PA, and nearby areas. However, Pipeshark specializes in the repair and replacement of difficult-to-access piping. That includes a sewer line running under your deck, lawn, driveway, sidewalk, or basement floor, as well as the drain stack running down your inside wall. We don’t do water heaters one day and a sewer repair the next. We do trenchless repairs and replacements every workday. We’ve worked on thousands of lines from homes to commercial and manufacturing situations as well as the US Army Corps of Engineers and the National Park Service.

The Sewer & Drain Line Inspection Process
Any investigation into a sewer repair in Philadelphia, PA, and the surrounding areas should begin with a sewer camera inspection. A clear video inspection is the best way to know what the true status of the piping is — and homeowners can watch the video along with the plumber to see for themselves what, if any, issues are present. Sometimes a problem is seen which can be fixed with just a thorough cleaning of the pipe. For times where more work is required, it’s good to have trenchless options to choose from.
You can have your preferred plumber in Philadelphia, PA area do a video inspection for you. If the line is too full of corrosion, scale, or grease, it may need to be cleaned first to get a true assessment of its condition. If the video shows an issue, don’t proceed with a traditional excavation or wall removal until you check out your trenchless options. We work for both homeowners and other plumbers. We own ALL the trenchless technologies and are certified in their efficient use.
Philadelphia Sewer Line Pipe Repair
Common issues in sewer lines range from a total collapse of the drain pipe to minor cracks, offset joints, holes, and root intrusions. Depending on pipe conditions, the two most common trenchless repair options are pipe lining and pipe bursting. Pipe lining’s technical name is Cured-In-Place Piping, or CIPP because the process manufactures a new pipe right inside the old one. The new pipe is code approved and matches the strength characteristics of a new sewer and drain pipe one could pick up at a supply house. So if the old pipe completely rots away, the new liner pipe is okay standing alone. We are an experienced pipe lining company in Philadelphia, PA area, and carry certifications from three manufacturers.
Pipe bursting is the best trenchless option for a collapsed sewer line. A bullet-shaped head is pulled through the old pipe by a steel cable pulled by a hydraulic ram. Attached to the back of the bursting head is a new sewer pipe of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). This material has some great strength and lifespan characteristics which is why it’s used for gas mains. The pipe sections are fused together so it is essentially one pipe with no joints to leak or for roots to get into. As the bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, it breaks it up into pieces and pushes it aside while at the same time pulling the new pipe into place. No one has done pipe bursting longer in the Philadelphia area than Pipeshark. We worked to get many of the original code approvals and have thousands of jobs installed successfully. We’ve done residential sewer mains as well as municipal sewer and storm drain mains.
How Sewer Line Repairs Can Benefit Pennsylvania Residences & Businesses
Besides reduced cost and time, trenchless technologies save homeowners the mess that comes with digging up the yard and ripping up landscaping, walkways, and other outside infrastructure or ripping out walls, ceilings, and floors to access the old pipe inside. Then once the old pipe is rehabbed, a trenchless approach saves all the restoration work that would need to be done under a traditional approach.
Commercial establishments, such as hospitals, universities, or professional offices, need to keep their daily operations running as smoothly as possible during the duration of the project. Golf courses and national parks are examples of the special projects we have supported with a clear understanding and respect regarding unique needs and specifications.
