The Process of Installing a Point Repair
Sometimes repeated blockages or leaks in a sewer or drain line are caused by the same single issue and the rest of the piping is in very good condition. If it is some type of obstruction, it can be removed by cleaning equipment. If it is something like a hole or an offset joint, it can often be repaired by a point repair. So it is important to begin every call with a video inspection of the drain line to be clear exactly what the problem is.
Most contractors offering plumbing services in Philadelphia, PA, and the suburbs now have sewer camera inspection. A video inspection not only removes the guessing from what the problem is but just as importantly, it allows the owners to see for themselves what the problem is. It removes the risk of being pushed into unnecessary work. If the homeowner can’t actually see the problem, then a repair doesn’t need to be done. Once the problem is identified, then the best solution can be discussed.
A typical example of a good point repair application is where a new line was installed but a joint has separated. A pipe lining company in Philadelphia, PA could line a whole section of piping to fix the problem. However, since the piping is all new, there isn’t much to be gained by pipe lining, or pipe coating, or pipe bursting. A point repair can be installed over the separation and the problem solved. Thus the customer still has a trenchless solution but one that is more economical than the others.
Once the defect is located and cleaned, a 2-4′ section of pipe lining (CIPP) is wrapped around a deflated bladder. Next, the bladder is slid into the pipe to center over the issue. Then the bladder is inflated so the pipe patch is pressed tightly against the sewer line while the epoxy cures. Once the epoxy is hard, the bladder is deflated and removed and the drain line is ready to be put back into service.
